Keynote: Security solutions for Microgrid energy networks

Security for smart industrial systems is prominent due to the proliferation of cyber threats threatening national critical infrastructures. Smart grid comes with intelligent applications that can utilize the bidirectional communication network among its entities. Microgrids are small-scale smart grids that enable Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications as they can operate with some degree of independence from the main grid.

In addition to protecting critical microgrid applications,an underlying key management scheme is needed to enable secure M2M message transmission and authentication. Existing key management schemes are not adequate due to microgrid special features and requirements.

We propose the Micro sElf-orgaNiSed mAnagement (MENSA), which is the first hybrid key management and authentication scheme that combines Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Web-of-Trust concepts in micro-grids.

Our experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of MENSA in terms of scalability and swiftness.

Metaverse Waves: Getting ‘real’ in the virtual world - ACCENTURE Platinum Sponsor

Accenture defines the metaverse as an evolution of the internet that enables a user to move beyond 'browsing' to ‘inhabiting’ in a persistent, shared experience that spans the spectrum of our real world to the fully virtual and in between.

The metaverse will define the next big wave of digital transformation. Why the metaverse is mega-valuable and why is expected to change our lives?

11:10 - 11:50

Foundations of the Metaverse: Azure Spatial Anchors and Understanding 3D Space

The Metaverse is one of the big buzzwords that has been adopted by large tech companies in 2021 to the extent that Facebook's parent company even changed their name to Meta.

A core component of the Metaverse is ability to precisely locate oneself, real objects and virtual objects in a real environment and to be able to understand that environment.

This session looks at relevant Azure, software, and hardware technologies that help with this task such as Azure Spatial Anchors to enable the Metaverse.

Microsoft HoloLens 2 will serve as a demonstration device for those technologies.

After this session attendees will have a better understanding of what can enable a Metaverse that integrates with the real world.

To all developers: Your code adds or removes your system’s security

Should we all agree that Security is a software quality aspect that needs to be treated in all seriousness and craftsmanship? This presentation will show how security can be integral to a software developer’s daily work (or habit if you will) and how it is affected by how clean and maintainable a given codebase is.

Our goal is to help software developers realize how the so called Security by Design is affected by making sure the code they develop is highly maintainable. In our experience the majority of security incidents are caused by software mistakes (or better code-level mistakes). During our session we will use real-life examples to demonstrate how good code quality can be a layer of security defense from inside out. After all, good and maintainable code means faster changes and faster fixes when security incidents occur.

Our final goal is to contribute in shaping the software developers culture in adding the perspective of Security and secure coding early on during the development process of a given system. We firmly believe that more (and better) awareness should be raised towards this direction underlining the significance of how different source code properties affect each other and ultimately how maintainability reinforces Security by Design.

Improving Developer Experience with Backstage

Onboarding is difficult, finding information can be a pain, collaborating across teams or domains is hard, and no-one likes context switching between cloud portals, CI/CD Tooling and whatnot. This and other modern frustrations are causing friction in the day-to-day lives of developers.

This friction is taking away pleasure, effectiveness, and will eventually result in bad code, people leaving or being burnt out. Investing in Developer Happiness is key, but where to begin? Should you build yet another portal? Implement that new DevOps platform? Try that Inner Source thing?

In this session we're discussing all of this and take a look at Backstage, an Open Source platform you can use to build an Internal Developer Portal with and massively improve your developer experience. Because happy developers write happy code.

Terraform Practices - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Terraform is a GREAT tool, but like a lot of other things in life, it has its pitfalls and bad practices.

Since you are working with Terraform, you probably went through its documentation, which can tell you what resources can be used - BUT do you always have a clear path towards using these resources? How should modules be constructed? How should you structure your Terraform code in general?

In this talk, I’ll cover the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to Terraform. I will show best practices for working with Terraform that were put together with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, so you’ll ultimately have a go-to approach and a paved way for working with Terraform, whether it’s an existing codebase or a new functionality altogether, and also hopefully make you think about the big picture and utilize Terraform in a broader context rather than just an “infrastructure as code"" tool.

Chopping the monolith

Micro services are ubiquitous. However, most companies that implement micro services do not reap their full benefits - at best. At worst, it’s an epic failure.

There are reasons for micro services: independent deployment of business capabilities. However, the unspoken assumption is that you need to deploy all capabilities all the time. My experience has shown me that it’s plain wrong. Some capabilities need frequent deployment, while some are much more stable. In “the past”, we used Rule Engines to allow updating business rules without deployment. While it solved the problem, this approach had issues. Between introducing a Rule Engine and migrating your complete system to micro services, I believe that there’s a middle path, and that this path is Function-as-a-Service.

In this talk, I’ll detail every point I’ve made above, and show how one can use Serverless to pragmatically design a system that allows deploying as often as you need.

Shifting Left Stateful Applications In Kubernetes

Stateless apps are easy to manage. More often than not, a Kubernetes Deployment, with a Service, Ingress, and Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) is enough.

Almost everyone can do it. But, when it comes to stateful applications, things become a bit more complicated. We might need a database and storage. We might need to manage database users and schema. We might need to consider quite a few other things. Stateful apps are harder for everyone, especially if we want to shift left and enable developers to do it themselves.

In this talk, we'll try to make the management of stateful applications easy for everyone. We'll accomplish that by creating easy-to-consume services that are made specifically for the needs of our organizations. We'll see how to create new Kubernetes Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) and controllers using Crossplane. Those controllers will envelop all the tools, resources, and processes we might need. As a result, ops can focus on creating such services while everyone else can consume them (create and manage everything related to stateful apps) without opening JIRA tickets and waiting for others to complete their tasks.
